The Dutch Antilian Surinam (DAS) working group has developed after almost a decade as a forum for international knowledge transfer and discussions on coping with ethnicity and disease in the Caribbean.
After almost a decade of mutual cooperation between medical specialists from the Netherlands, Suriname, the Antilles and nowadays also from Colombia, this annual, mutually organized conference has grown into a broad platform for the transfer of knowledge from general practitioners, rheumatologists and internists from the various regions. The congress is located at a different location every year; DAS clinics were previously organized in Suriname, on Curaçao and now again on Aruba.
Intercultural collaborations to improve patient care in the Netherlands, the Antilles and Suriname
Increasing migration of patient groups such as the Netherlands, the Antilles and Suriname requires a broader view of doctors to their patients. It is important to know about the disease burden, the disease presentations and dealing with diseases in the country of origin. Conferences such as the DAS clinic, where clinical problems and expertise are shared, can help Dutch, Antillean, Surinamese and also Colombian doctors.
